One hour drive from Bordeaux, one of Europe's largest sand dunes in a resort called Arcachon. I didn't know there were dunes in this country until I lived in France! It's difficult to climb because it's on a hill, but the cool sand feels good, and the beaches and forests that spread out in front of you are superb.
