Citizen volunteers make colorful flower carpet using petals grown in Hokkaido such as rose and carnation.◎Since this year, Photo View Spot has put to over look the flower carpet. I visited here for my interest in the history of Otaru, I could find the herring fishery in the old time was profitable very well. Though you need fee to Otaru Kihinkan, anyone can see these ceiling pictures for they're located at the entrance lobby. ◎To access here, Otaru Kihinkan is far from the city central, so you need to use car. If you use bus, make sure of the timetable for there're only a few services.

The drift ice arrives at Shiretoko registered as a world heritage site. Some wild animals such as Steller's sea eagle get together to get food. There's a boat to see such creatures from Rausu Port in early morning, and you can enjoy watching them very close!◎Car is convenient here. It's better to come to Rausu the day before and stay at night, then leave for Rausu Port in early morning. The drift ice starts to arrive from the end of February. As soon as the drift ice arrives, you can watch Steller's sea eagle and others like that, but after a while, you can see sea lions. By the way, these eagles get together for the fish thrown from this tour boat, so you have a great chance to watch them.

As for Hokkaido, you may recall the straight road that expends so far away. Along such a road, there're cherry blossom trees such as Ezo Yamazakura, standing as long as 7 kilometers, and you can enjoy driving there! I could see the voluminous cherry blossoms suitable for a large Hokkaido Prefecture!◎I uses the car headlights to take the first pic, there're no lights. For it's popular cherry blossom spot, more and more cars get together as the time becomes near noon. To access here, cars are most convenient, and you can park the roadside. The extra bus are available from Shizunai Station.

Oni Hanabi (Demon's Firework) is a limited event on Thursdays and Fridays at Noboribetsu Onsen hot spring town. The demons appear from the darkness and dance for exorcism as a back ground of Jigokudani (Hell Valley). At the climax of the how, they spark the very strong fire works in hands! Together with the hot spring. it could be a great experience of your summer.◎This show is taken place on only Thursdays and Fridays, and not on weekends! If you have car, Jigokudani parking area is available. For people use public transportation, there's bus from Noboribetsu to Noboribetsu Onsen, but staying at Noboribetsu Onsen would be better.

Fukuhara Sanso Lodge's garden is opened to public only during autumn. There're as many as 1000 trees of ruby-red momiji (Japanese maple tree) that are rarely seen in Hokkaido. After the leaves fall, the whole ground becomes like a red carpet. I visited Hiraoka Jugei Center to see its garden, but I was moved with this wonderful scenery of a street lined with red leaves. It was raining on that day, I want to come again on sunny day.◎It's located a little far from the nearest station, it's better for you to come by car.

CHAPEL ON THE WATER is located inside of Hoshino Resort TOMAMU. It was designed by Tadao Ando, and one of the three best chapels by him. The cross floating on the water is fantastic. You can see the building at only night.

Shikaribetsu Lake Kotan is an icy village appears only in midwinter on the frozen lake surface. There're bar, open-air bath of ice, and even ice houses! We can enjoy the cold Hokkaido to our hearts' content. You need cars or bus to access here. We stay in the ice house (igloo) in the third pic, and rent sleeping bags and winter outfits, or we can run to the hotel when we're cold. The Milky Way can be seen before dawn in the late February.

We were thrilled with the animals we can see at close range. Don't forget winter clothes because it's still covered with snow partly. The Penguin Walk Show is must-see, which penguins walk very near us! What's more, I love this so lovely soft served ice cream!

An elevated wooden path to Ichi-ko Lake, one of the five lakes of Shiretoko. The 800 meters path seems to stretch beautifully to the sky, and the mountain range of Shiretoko and the Sea of Okhotsk are truly breathtaking scenery! A spruce tree standing on a hill of Biei is called 'Christmas Tree'. Under the tree, there're potato fields which have flowers in summer and become snowy white hills in winter! You can see the scenery from the road, but be sure not to enter the fields.◎Access: usually by a rental car. Bibaushi Station is the nearest if you use railroad, but I think it's better to use taxi from Biei Station.
